Gallery Time

Gallery Time is a PTA sponsored, art enrichment program for grades 1-5, where children are introduced to the works of significant artists, encouraged to express their own ideas about what they see, and are given the opportunity to express their creativity through artwork of their own. 

What does a Gallery Time Volunteer do?

● Volunteers receive art background information at least 2 weeks ahead of your scheduled lesson. Choose the concepts and activity you think the class would enjoy most - the packet includes suggested activities, or you may design your own project based on the concepts of the lesson. You don’t need to cover all of the detail provided in the background packet; this is to give you a wider understanding of the topic.

● Most lesson blocks are 45 minutes and are held in the classroom. Please give yourself some extra time before the lesson to review the supplies on the cart and prepare any of the materials needed. Volunteers spend 5-10 minutes explaining the big ideas of the theme with the class and introducing your chosen activity. Keep it simple and geared towards your child’s age.

Sometimes you can find short videos online about the artist or the topic. If you do, send it to your teacher in advance and see if they can show it to the class during your presentation. The remaining lesson time is for the activity. Allow as much time for this as you can. You may wish reserve a few minutes at the end for the class to share their art with each other, if you have enough time. 

● After the lesson is over, please plan time for you to hang artwork on the hall bulletin board designated by your teacher, unless the artwork is wet/unable to be hung. A stapler is on the cart. Please make a simple sign to display "PTA Gallery Time" and the topic. Please make sure the cart and supplies are neat and prepared for the next presenter. If supplies need refilling, please contact your school's gallery time coordinator, listed below, ASAP. 

● Best of all, volunteers don’t need to be experienced artists or teachers! We will provide posters of the artwork and art supplies listed in the suggested activities of the lesson plan. You may choose to create your own activity, but the only supplies provided will be listed on the cover sheet of your lesson plan.
